French fashion designer Franck Sorbier is getting ready for a haute couture show coming up this week. The sagging global economy is re-tailoring the event this year. Designers in Paris are putting their final touches on dresses ahead of the haute couture shows which begin on Monday. French designer and self-proclaimed fashion industry trouble-maker Franck Sorbier, is celebrating his 10th year on the haute couture circuit. Sorbier\’s latest collection which will be presented on Wednesday. The shows will coincide with a credit crunch that brought lean times to some luxury industries. [Franck Sorbier, Haute Couture Designer]: \”In a period like this we are not going to go out and buy very extravagant things. For example, this season we have used a lot of recycled material.\” As sales of luxury goods decline in the global economic slowdown, many wonder if privately owned fashion houses, like Christian Lacroix will be able to survive. [Franck Sorbier, Haute Couture Designer]: \”Haute couture was also an elegance but set in its ways, and he (Christian Lacroix) came in with his off-beat mixes etc, and so I find that that is one tragedy, because I feel that it is a tough thing to say about someone who went out on a limb and in this situation, and another serious thing is that on some level it means that there is no place for couture artists.\” Two of the women in his workshop intricately braid the ribbons for a dress that has so far absorbed more than 500 hours of work.
